For years I have been going a 3 day camping trip in the fall. And every year I lug up a preassembled horseshoe pit
made of 1x4 lumber. It's just to big and heavy.

I saw a youtube video of a horseshoe tournament and the pit had a hard rubber backstop. I need something like that so I
can build a lightweight pit that is durable enough but yet easy to move.

Any ideas of what it is out there for me to use would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mac666:   A highly durable, light weight take-along-pit is a simple project to build.  You simply need a small frame made of some type of angle iron which is easily bent to the desired size.  Bolt a 1/4" thick piece of conveyor belt to the bottom.  Cut another length of the belt about 4" high, (12" for the back board), which will  be the back, sides and front. Bolt this to the angle iron.  You need a 4" wide piece of flat iron, cut to your desired length, to weld the stake to.  You cut a one inch hole in the center of the pit for the stake. Then add mud. I've made a few of these, usually about 24" by 18."  Note the absence of wood!  Of course it is much easier just to drive two stakes into the ground. Smiley

PS:  Before you go on the trip, mix your perfect mud, then place it into a cooler.  The mud will retain moisture and STAY perfect for days.

Can someone give me an estimated cost of constructing a portable pit--1 single pit? Also, where can the design plans be found? At one time I send them but have been unable to relocate them.  Thanks

rbaker, look here and simply make one half the size.   You'll have to measure the material you need and go to any Lowe's, Home Depot, or hardware store and price things out.  It's impossible to list prices as this is a worldwide site.

Thanks Casey for the information. If anyone has recently built a portable court please let me know what your expenses were for materials only.

Try this, get a pair of light weight, worn out, 20" tires, cut one side wall off of each tire next to the tread and discard the sidewall.  Now turn the tires wrong side out, get a piece of 5/8 or 3/4 inch treated plywood and cut a circle about 6 inches bigger than the hole where the rim used to fit.  Lay the tires, bead side down, on the plywood circles, put screws through the tire into the wood, for strength the screws should be long enough to have to grind the ends off on the plywood side.  Weld a plate and gusset on the end of a stake and bolt it to the plywood inside the tire.  Fill with your favorite court material and have fun.

Homer
Gerald Stangland from MN has a set like you described, and has been using them wherever he camps for many years. They sure don't seem to hinder his pitching percentage.
