This, from the Welcome letter, http://www.horseshoepitching.com/cedarrapids/WORLD10.PDF
Pitchers must wear at check-in and during play, clean shirt with name and state/province professionally lettered at least 1 inch high on the back.

While I won't be going to the WT, my heart still went up to my throat when I read that as I recently got my first (and only) shirt back from the printer (at a cost of some $32).  I hurried to check it out, tape measure in hand.

Lucky, I am, as the lettering slightly exceeds that 1" specification.

How did I miss that spec, I asked myself, as I was sure I'd checked with the stated rules.

I just re-checked the specs on the rules page.  Here they are:

All contestants competing in a World Tournament shall have, as a minimum, their last name and State or Country abbreviation professionally lettered on the back of their shirts.

There you have it -- no mention of size at all.  Perhaps the powers that be need to revisit either the already-published rules or the World Tourney welcome letter and make sure they match.

Hi, Len.

Thank you for paying so much attention to the World Tournament welcome letter. I'm sure there are contestants who don't read anything except their own pitching time.

I just wanted to draw your attention to the very first paragraph of that letter that states:

"As a participant, you should know the "Official Rules of Play" and the special requirements of this tournament."

All items appearing in the welcome letter that are not covered in the RGS book would fall under that heading. All entrants should receive that letter in ample time to acquire the appropriate equipment and apparel.

Hi Tina,

Thanks for your reply.  When I first posted this question I wasn't aware that the welcoming letter had mentioned the shirt requirements in at least 3 different places.  Since this letter will probably form the basis for next years letter as well, it would be smart planning to assure that letter specifies the requirement in a single place (which eliminates needless redundancy) -- or make sure that there is no contradiction between the 3 instances.

Page 1:
Pitchers must wear at check-in and during play, a clean shirt with name and state/province professionally lettered at least 1 inch high on the back...

Page 2:
Note: You must be available for check-in and class photos one hour before your scheduled pitching time. Your name and state/province must be professionally lettered on the back of your shirt. ..

Pitchers must wear at check-in and during play, clean shirt with name and state/province professionally lettered at least 1 inch high on the back...

Respectfully,

Good luck with that easy to read/understand/non-redundant request, Len.

We have been requesting a new way to arrange the schedule for 2 years, but the same format continues to be used.  This is a problem because the way the schedule is, one of the top players misread the finals time and was not allowed to play in the finals, even though he arrived in time to pitch.

I know that a lot of work goes into getting the schedule and letter out to everyone, but we need to take a careful look at the world tournament letter and schedule form to make things easier for people so that we limit the amount of misunderstanding that is possible.

I was thrilled to see that one of the suggestions from last year was put into place.  This was the first year that a spot on the entry form allowed a pitcher to select whether or not they needed a mailed copy or if they would just access it on the web.  This was recommended at last year's convention. They (the officers) do listen to suggestions, Len, so keep making recommendations and we'll see if it is put into play.
